Charter Square marquee market 19 Nov to 20 Dec 2026; cathedral market 26-28 Nov, now £2 entry; college market Sat 21 Nov, free. Why the Fayre is not back.
Bury St Edmunds has no single Christmas market in 2026. It has four separate markets in the town centre, running on four different sets of dates, two more on the edge of town, and one of them has started charging admission. What it does not have, still, is the Christmas Fayre.
Here is the whole picture, checked against each organiser’s own listing.
Updated 3 October: the Eastern Education Group market is now officially listed for Saturday 21 November, 10am to 4pm, free with no booking. Charter Square’s hours are still unpublished.

The cathedral market now charges to get in
The cathedral’s own listing puts the market on Thursday 26 to Saturday 28 November 2026, doors 10am to 4.30pm daily with last entry at 4pm, and more than 50 stallholders from Suffolk and beyond inside the building. There is daily entertainment including carols and live music.
Then this line, which is new: “Please note that this year, entry to the Christmas Market will be £2.00 per person.” Random bag searches may take place before entry.
Two pounds is not much, but it is a change, and it is the sort of thing people find out at the door. Budget for it if you are taking a family.
The longest market is the one in the marquee
Christmas at Bury St Edmunds is the big one by duration: a heated, floored and carpeted marquee in Charter Square, in the heart of the arc, with overnight security. Organiser Eden Crafts’ diary of events gives the 2026 run as 19 November to 20 December, which is 32 days.
Be careful which page you read. Eden Crafts’ own event detail page still carries last year’s copy underneath the 2026 banner, headed “20th November - 21st December 2025” and describing the event as new and starting on St Edmund’s Day. The 2026 dates are in the banner and in the diary listing; the body text has not been rewritten. If you find the 21 December end date anywhere, that is where it came from.
Opening hours for the marquee have not been published for 2026.
The two smaller fairs
The Athenaeum Christmas Craft and Gift Fair runs on Sunday 25 October and Sunday 22 November 2026, 10am to 4pm, at the Athenaeum in the town centre, satnav postcode IP33 1LY. Over 50 stalls of local crafts and gifts, and admission is free, according to organiser Crafted Events.
The Bury St Edmunds Makers Market runs on the first Sunday of the month. West Suffolk Markets’ events listing has it on Sunday 1 November and Sunday 6 December 2026. Across the rest of the district the same operator runs Haverhill on 7 November and 5 December, Newmarket on 14 November and 12 December, and a Mildenhall Winter Market on Sunday 13 December.
None of that displaces the ordinary charter market, which trades on the Cornhill and Buttermarket every Wednesday and Saturday through December.
Bury St Edmunds Christmas market 2026: the two outside the centre
Rougham Estate’s Arts and Crafts Fair at Blackthorpe Barn (satnav IP30 9HZ) is the biggest ticketed option near town, and the one most people forget because it is not in the centre. The estate’s Christmas page gives five 2026 weekends, each with a different mix of makers, open 10am to 4pm:
- 14 and 15 November
- 21 and 22 November
- 28 and 29 November
- 5 and 6 December
- 12 and 13 December
A day ticket is £2.50 online or £3 on the door, children aged 15 and under go free, and a £10 season ticket covers all ten days. The Christmas shop in the barn is separate and free: it opens on Monday 19 October, 9.30am to 5pm daily (4pm on Sundays) until 23 December, with free parking. Estate-grown Christmas trees, including pick-your-own Nordmann firs, go on sale from mid-November.
Eastern Education Group (the West Suffolk College group) ran its first public Christmas market in November 2025 at its University and Professional Development Centre in Bury St Edmunds. Organiser Liz Creasy put the turnout at 600 and said the next one “is set to take place on November 21, 2026” (SuffolkNews, 26 November 2025). It is now confirmed. The Our Bury St Edmunds listing puts it on Saturday 21 November 2026, 10am to 4pm, at the University and Professional Development Centre, 73 Western Way, IP33 3SP. There are festive stalls and craft workshops, a Christmas tree wood with “Virtual Santa” and real elves, a post box for letters to Santa, food vendors, and the St Edmundsbury Male Voice Choir as the first announced act. No booking is needed.
Free rides and a free ice rink
Two free things run alongside the markets, both part of Christmas in Bury St Edmunds and both listed by Our Bury St Edmunds:
- Family rides in the Abbey Gardens, on the former bowling green: a caterpillar coaster, dodgem rings and chair rides, 11am to 4pm, Wednesday to Sunday from 25 November to 20 December, then daily on 21, 22 and 23 December. Free, no booking.
- A synthetic ice rink in Charter Square, from Tuesday 22 December (11am to 5pm) and Wednesday 23 December, then every day from Boxing Day to 4 January 2027, 11am to 5pm. Free, no booking, 30-minute sessions including putting skates on and taking them off.
The rink goes into Charter Square two days after the marquee market there closes on 20 December, so the two never overlap. Both are subject to the weather.
So is the Christmas Fayre coming back?
No. Nothing in any 2026 listing is the Christmas Fayre, and nothing has been announced.
The sequence is worth setting out, because the search for it has never gone away. West Suffolk Council cancelled the fayre on 30 March 2020 so that public services could concentrate on Covid, with council leader John Griffiths saying planning for it was “a massive task” that had to be booked that far ahead (SuffolkNews). It was then cancelled for a second year in 2021, with Our Bury St Edmunds chief executive Mark Cordell putting the loss at “the missing 100,000 people who would go to that event” (East Anglian Daily Times).
It did not come back. From 2022 the council stopped staging it, and a Christmas in Bury St Edmunds Partnership took over: the arc, Our Bury St Edmunds BID, Bury St Edmunds Town Council, St Edmundsbury Cathedral and West Suffolk Council, each running its own event rather than one town-wide fayre (SuffolkNews, 19 January 2023).
That partnership is exactly what the table at the top of this page describes. The events are real and there are more of them than there used to be. They are spread over five weeks instead of one weekend, which is the point of the change and also the reason it does not feel like the fayre did.
Getting there and parking
The Charter Square marquee is inside the arc, so the Arc-Cattlemarket car park is the obvious one: 865 spaces, £3.20 for two hours, four-hour maximum. Its underground level locks at 6pm, and the lock-in number is 01284 763252. For the cathedral market, Angel Hill on-street bays and Ram Meadow are closer.
If you are staying the day, Ram Meadow at £3.50 is the cheapest in town and has 823 spaces. Olding Road is free from 3.30pm on weekdays and from 7am at weekends. Full tariffs and the free windows are on our parking page, and anything dug up on the approach roads will show on our roadworks and travel page.
The lights go on the night the marquee opens: see our Christmas lights event page for 19 November.
