We checked 20 Bury St Edmunds shops, from Javelin on Abbeygate Street to Vinyl Hunter on St John's Street, for hours and addresses. Updated November 2026.

Bury St Edmunds has 20 shops worth a Christmas shopping trip in 2026, and this guide puts them in one place with opening hours, addresses and what each one sells. Javelin, Lisa Angel, Starlings Toys and the run of independents on St John’s Street are the names most people land on. We checked every entry against the shop’s own site on 5 November 2026, and say where a detail came from elsewhere.

We have not shopped at any of these for this guide, and nothing here is a review. Most are independents; Our Bury St Edmunds, the town’s business improvement district, lists every one of them in its directory of independent businesses. We say where a shop belongs to a group with branches elsewhere. Shops often change their hours close to Christmas, so check before a special trip.

Dates for the Christmas shopping diary

  • Wednesdays and Saturdays: Bury St Edmunds market. More than 80 stalls on the Cornhill and the Buttermarket, 9am to 4pm, according to West Suffolk Markets.
  • Thursday 19 November: the Christmas Lights Event, 3pm to 8pm in the town centre. It is free, with no tickets.
  • Thursdays 19 November to 17 December: free parking from 4pm to 8pm in West Suffolk Council’s town centre car parks. Kirsty Pollard, the arc’s centre manager, said almost all arc stores will be open until 7pm on those Thursdays, “plus a few open even later”. Independents decide their own hours.
  • 19 November to 20 December: the Charter Square Christmas market marquee, 9.30am to 6pm. The cathedral’s Christmas market runs 26 to 28 November, and there are Festive Sunday markets on the Buttermarket on 22 and 29 November and 20 December. Our Christmas markets page has the times and prices.
  • Sunday 22 November: the Athenaeum Christmas craft fair on Angel Hill, 10am to 4pm, free entry.

How we chose

We started from Our Bury St Edmunds’ list of independent businesses and picked shops that sell gifts, clothing, toys, jewellery, books and music, or food to give. We then read each shop’s own website on 5 November 2026 for its hours, address and what it sells, and quote the BID’s directory where a detail comes from there instead. Shops we could not check on a site of their own were left out; that is not a judgement on them. Nobody paid to be included.
